Mutuus Studio
Mutuus Studio is a woman-owned architecture firm led by architect Kristen Becker. Mutuus is known for distinctive, highly crafted spaces that seamlessly unite architecture, interiors, and custom fabrication into a singular design vision. We believe architecture, interiors, and objects form a single, interconnected experience and we feel that the most compelling environments emerge through the thoughtful integration of architecture, furnishings, art, and material detail.
What sets our practice apart is this fully integrated approach where architecture, interior design, and custom fabrication are all developed under one roof, creating a seamless and holistic experience from concept to completion. This holistic model allows us to design with an uncommon level of continuity and intention. Rather than treating architecture, interiors, and custom elements as separate disciplines, we consider every detail as part of a unified vision. The result is spaces that feel cohesive, deeply personal, and thoughtfully tailored to the people who inhabit them. Throughout the process, we serve as trusted stewards of our clients’ projects, guiding them every step of the way.
This direct collaboration enables a level of customization, craftsmanship, and quality control that distinguishes our practice and is further strengthened through our parallel fabrication company, Mutuus Made. Led by artist and owner Saul Becker, Mutuus Made designs and produces custom lighting, architectural hardware, furniture, and specialty finishes in our Seattle studio. Because design and fabrication are developed side-by-side, we can create bespoke solutions that would be difficult to achieve through a traditional architecture practice. By uniting design and making within a single practice, we deliver highly personalized environments where every detail is considered.
The name Mutuus (moo-tis) comes from the Latin word meaning “mutual” or “exchange.” We view design as an inherently collaborative process—an ongoing exchange between client, architect, maker, and place. This philosophy guides every aspect of our practice. We collaborate across a diverse range of project types at every scale from custom homes and their interiors to hospitality and cultural projects. Through this partnership, we create environments that reflect the unique stories, values, and aspirations of the people who live, work, and gather within them.
Originally founded in New York City in 2008, Mutuus Studio expanded to Seattle in 2016 and work on projects nationwide. Their award winning work has been published in The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Dwell, Elle DEcor, Luxe, Landscape Architecture among others.
