MD Architects (MDA) is a full-service, relationship-based architecture firm dedicated to providing the animal care, human healthcare, and dental industry with superior planning, design, specifications, and construction guidance.

Rick Renschen founded the firm in 2000 to design and develop human medical facilities, specifically oncology and outpatient surgery centers. In 2006, we were approached by a national animal hospital client to construct a facility that would expand our niche into animal-centric spaces. Decades of experience and over a thousand projects later, we’ve discovered that both human healthcare and animal care markets reflect similar design considerations and needs, allowing our work in the individual fields to complement the other and offer cutting-edge solutions. In 2023, the firm joined forces with the renowned Seattle-based design firm Architectural Werks, Inc. (AWI). Together, we’re one of the most experienced firms of its kind. MDA has studio locations in Seattle, Indianapolis, and Boston – bringing an unrivaled depth of expertise and personalized service from coast to coast and beyond.

For the past 25 years, MD Architects’ combined team of specialized architects, designers, and project managers have walked clients through every step of the process – from conceptual designs to final inspections in construction administration. Most recently, we were honored by the renowned veterinary publication, dvm360, with a Merit Award (Pure Paws Veterinary Care) and winning the Hospital Design of the Year Award (Habitat Veterinary Hospital) in the 2024 Veterinary Hospital Design Competition. We’ve been recognized for our animal care design expertise in numerous national publications like Construction in Focus Magazine, PetVet Magazine, and Today’s Veterinary Business Magazine.
